Title: The Māori Sexuality Project

This is an exemplar of a research project conducted over a 36-month (2002 – 2005). The research team consisted of Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Dr Leonie Pihama, Ms Glenis Philip-Barbara and Dr Clive Aspin, and was hosted by the International Research Institute for Maori and Indigenous Education (IRI), The University of Auckland. The Māori Sexuality Project was funded by the HRC and FRST Maori Knowledge and Development Fund.

The Maori Sexuality Project sought to contribute to the improvement of the social and health outcomes for Māori by developing Kaupapa Māori research based knowledge of Māori definitions and expressions of sexuality, and by designing specific Kaupapa Māori Health interventions.
