A general definition of methodology for any research project is the theoretical and philosophical means by which you will undertake your research. For Kaupapa Māori research the underpinning philosophy and approach is that of tikanga Maori. It is through tīkanga Māori that we conceptualise our approach to research. As such Kaupapa Māori Research links directly to Kaupapa Māori Theory. The theoretical approach to this research project is one of Kaupapa Māori Theory. Key elements of this methodological approach are discussed in the methodology section.
The Māori Sexuality project developed in a period where a number of conservative voices were actively denying the existence of takatapui Māori and where the whānau itself was being redefined by those groups to deny diversity within our people. Much of the representations being made were grounded in deficit theories. In addition to that much of the ideology that was being espoused was based upon colonial ideologies about how we are as Maori. This research is grounded within Kaupapa Māori Research approaches and sought to locate Māori views and understandings at the centre of the research. The video clips here explore the importance of ensuring Māori Sexuality is engaged and analysed through Māori frameworks.
