The analysis for this project was undertaken as a group process which began with providing an opportunity for all involved to make comment on what they believed were key points in the interviews that had been undertaken. This opportunity was taken up by some of the researchers involved who gave feedback on themes that they identified in the process of doing the interviews. This was followed by hui with the Principal Investigators who discussed and debated a range of themes that were emerging across the interviews as a whole. Analysis of interviews and korero in this way is generally regarded ‘thematic analysis’ which is itself fundamentally a process of identifying key themes that exist within the information and coding those either as a theme or a sub-theme. Such a process works well within a Kaupapa Māori research project in that it is based within an understanding of the kōrero itself, and therefore as is the case within hui, those involved must ‘listen’ carefully to what is being said in order to identify the key themes that are coming through the interview material. This video clip highlights the process of analysis used by the research team.
